North Carolina man gets $91,000 utility bill

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -

No question, a $91,644 utility bill for a vacant, three-bedroom rental house in Fayetteville is a lot of money. Even if it includes electricity and water.

Troy Hill of St. Pauls says he was very surprised when the bill from Fayetteville's Public Works Commission arrived.

"I knew right away something was wrong," Hill said.

He told The Fayetteville Observer the bill should have been for about $15.

Hill, 43, says he called the utility earlier this week and was promised an updated bill, though a customer service representative could not say what the bill would total.

Utility's spokeswoman Carolyn Justice-Hinson says Hill has several accounts and the error occurred on one account that is being closed. She said the computer system spotted the error, but not before the incorrect bill was sent.

Justice-Hinson said it appears the problem has been resolved.

Hill says he's just glad he did not have that account set up to be paid automatically from his checking account.
