Amazon warehouses will bring 1K+ jobs to Bay area

Posted: Updated:
TAMPA, FL (WFLA) - Internet retailer Amazon.com Inc. announced plans to build warehouses in Hillsborough and Polk counties, creating more than 1,000 jobs in central Florida.

The company said in a news release that it would build fulfillment centers in Hillsborough County and Lakeland. Each will be more than 1 million square feet.

“We look forward to offering more than 1,000 full-time jobs with comprehensive benefits at our new fulfillment centers in Hillsborough County and Lakeland, Florida,” said Mike Roth, Amazon’s vice president of North America operations. “We appreciate the state, city and county officials who have worked with us to bring these fulfillment centers to Florida. We’re excited to join the community, bringing great jobs and investment to the area.”

Earlier in the month, local officials said Amazon had closed on a deal to locate a distribution center in Hillsborough County, but the company made the public announcement Tuesday.

The company says that at the Lakeland facility, employees will select, pack and ship large items such as kayaks and televisions to customers. Employees at the Hillsborough location will send smaller items to customers.

“I would like to thank Amazon for recognizing that Florida’s business-friendly environment we’ve helped create is the perfect place for their latest expansion,” said Florida Governor Rick Scott. “On behalf of all Floridians, we welcome Amazon and the great jobs and opportunities that their expansion brings to Florida families.”
