Poll: majority supports legalizing marijuana

Posted: Updated:
TAMPA, FL (WFLA) -

For the first time ever, a majority of Americans seem to be in favor of legalizing marijuana.

A recent Gallup poll shows 58% of those polled favor legalizing pot.  That's up 10 percentage points from last November.

39% are still opposed.

The pro-marijuana momentum is attributed to public referendums legalizing weed in Colorado and Washington state.  The federal government elected not to block the implementation of those laws.

Marijuana is still illegal under the federal Controlled Substances Act.

In Florida, there is a proposed ballot initiative to legalize medical marijuana.  Proponents hope to get it on the November 2014 ballot.
