PINELLAS COUNTY, FL - Pinellas County administrators say six hours in school isn't enough for elementary students to learn what they need to know for the FCAT and other standardized tests. A new online program called "Beyond The Classroom" allows students to practice reading, math, and other skills from any computer.

Pat Lusher works with digital content for Pinellas County schools. Lusher says the program is a great way to get the ball rolling at home.

"There's a recommended amount of time students should be spending on each topic at home per week," Lusher said. "This way families can plan activities for the week and use the program when they have down time or their kids say they're bored."

Lyla Winder who is in 4th grade loves the idea of playing math games at home.

"I ask my teacher for extra homework," Winder said. "I want to go into the technology field and doing math on the computer is really fun."

Lusher hopes other students will feel the same way Winder does.

"We talked to a lot of after school programs that have computer labs," Lusher said. "They just don't know what to do with the kids on the computers. Now we're providing the content and log in information for all the students."

Parents can access the portal now. Teachers are still learning how to use the program in the classroom.
