RALEIGH, N.C. -

A state-of-the-art fire station celebrated its grand opening Sunday in Northern Wake County with a unique ribbon cutting.

Rather than a traditional ribbon, the station's opening was commemorated with a separating of the fire hoses at the Bay Leaf Volunteer Fire Department off Six Forks Road.

Locals founded the all-volunteer department in 1961, and the area has grown so much since then that the station needed to expand.

The new station stands more than two stories tall and contains nearly 16,500 square feet of usable space. It can also now house a 24-hour staff and accommodate more than 80 personnel in a cutting-edge learning environment.

"This station should last and serve the community for the next 50 to 70 years," said Assistant Chief Don Adams. "It has a lot of expansion features."

The Bay Leaf Volunteer Fire Department is the first responder for medical and fire emergencies in the area, as well as boating emergencies on Falls Lake.
