DURHAM, N.C. -

Durham Police are investigating a fatal shooting during a party early Sunday morning at an apartment complex near North Carolina Central University.

Residents of the Campus Crossings apartment complex said a fight broke out at a party early Sunday morning. They say there were at least 50 people there when someone fired shots in the air and the party goers scrambled to leave.

"Everybody ran and everybody was like, 'We have to go, we have to go,'" explained Siobahn Small, who attended the party. "The cops showed up, and EMS, then everybody was just standing around I guess just waiting to see what was going to happen."

Around 3:48 a.m., officers responded to the shooting call and found Demario Lucas, 23, of Durham, lying in a breezeway with an apparent gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

A second male was taken to the hospital for treatment of a gunshot wound to the ankle.

No charges have been filed at this time.

Anyone with information is asked to call Investigator S. Pate at (919) 560-4440, ext. 29332 or CrimeStoppers at (919) 683-1200.
