In North Carolina, more than a dozen sea turtles made their way back to the water as they found a new home in the ocean.

On Thursday the North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores released 18 loggerhead sea turtles near the Gulf Stream, about 36 miles from shore.

The turtles were anywhere from a few weeks old to five years old.

Volunteers rescued the turtles after they struggled to leave the nest or were found injured.

The aquarium took them in and nursed them back to health until they were strong enough to make it out on their own.

"Everyone was very, very excited and pumped to be able to get the animals out. It's neat to watch the process of them being a hatchling that was on the verge of dying to being able to rehabilitate," said Michele Lamping, aquarist at the aquarium.

The aquarium released three turtles back in June and another in October from Fort Macon.
