FORT MITCHELL, KY (WFLA) -

There was a moment this week in northern Kentucky that has probably given one boy a permanent smile.

It took place on the football field. It was a simple sweep play that resulted in a score.

Miles Laird had no idea that his lifelong dream was about to come true. He was going to score a touchdown thanks to Beechwood head coach Tony Procaccino.

"He loves sports and athletics. And he is much a part of this program as any player and any coach we have here," said Tony Procaccino, Beechwood Head Coach.

Miles is a freshman at Beechwood High School in Fort Mitchell, Kentucky. He’s known most of these players since he was in kindergarten. But as they grew, as they excelled in sports, life took a different path for Miles.

He has Down syndrome. Despite the genetic disorder, he hasn’t let it keep him down.

"He loves the boys. He loves the coaches. Beechwood has been a home away from home for him. We're really lucky,” said Mary Kay Laird, Miles' Mother

Mom and Dad were not in on the surprise. They thought Miles was going to just be team captain for the Tigers and call the coin toss. They thought a chance to wear the uniform for the freshman game against Campbell County would be enough of a photo moment.

Miles, who woke up this morning singing the Beechwood fight song, was about to score a touchdown. But the real harmony is seeing all of the teenage players coming together to make this experience come to life.

And ironically a boy named Miles needed only 40-yards to remind us, ‘Yes,’ there’s plenty of good in this world.

For Miles, it’s not about wanting special attention. He just wanted to be like everyone else.
