Dontae Morris to speak in court on potential death sentence

Posted: Updated:
TAMPA, FL (WFLA) -

Dontae Morris appeared before a judge Friday in Tampa, saying he will cooperate with attorneys on a penalty phase if he is convicted of killing two Tampa police officers.

The 28-year-old Morris, charged with first-degree murder in the fatal shootings of Officers David Curtis and Jeffrey Kocab in 2010, has told his attorneys that he might not want them to argue against a death sentence if a jury next month finds him guilty, according to AP.

Today, he took the stand and told his attorneys he will cooperate.  "Everything that we're discussing right now, that y'all are discussing, I discussed this with Ms. Carole Springer and I discussed it with Ms. Karen Meeks."  Testified Morris.  "And I told them we were going to go through with the process. We didn't have to go through this. I discussed this with them, probably about two weeks ago."

Jury selection in the case is scheduled to begin next month.

Morris will go on trial Nov. 4 for the murders of the officers. Morris already was convicted in another murder case and sentenced to life in prison.
