Police say a Knightdale woman found dead in her apartment over the weekend was discovered face-down in her bed with an American flag draped over her.
Knightdale Police were called to the Alta Legacy Oaks apartment complex on Baxter Lane Saturday to check on the welfare of 55-year-old Seanne Marie Winters Barnette.
Barnette's neighbors had become concerned about her whereabouts because they usually saw her daily.
When responding officers arrived, they noticed flies surrounding a window and found Barnette lying face-down in her bed with an American flag draped over her.
Two days prior to her body's discovery, Virginia State Troopers found her vehicle on Interstate 95 in Prince William County, Va. Barnette's brother, 70-year-old John Wesley Winters, Jr., was inside the vehicle when it was located.
Police say Winters was in a confused mental state.
Winters was initially transported to Sentara Hospital in Woodbridge, Va., for medical evaluation, but he has since been charged in connection with the theft of Barnette's vehicle.
Knightdale Police is continuing its investigation to determine Winters' involvement in Barnette's death.
Police say Winters had been living with Barnette at the apartment for several weeks.
Police are treating the death as a homicide. This is only the second murder in Knightdale history.
Knightdale authorities said Friday Winters has not been charged in the incident but would not say if or when that could happen.
