Gas prices continue dropping in Tampa Bay

Posted: Updated:

Some drivers did double takes Tuesday at gas stations on West Hillsborough Avenue.  Then they made U-turns to fill up their tanks for $2.99 a gallon.

Average gas prices haven't dipped that low around here since 2010, according to AAA.  The bargain prices didn't last long.

By Tuesday afternoon, the stations were selling fuel at prices closer to the current Tampa Bay average of $3.18 a gallon.  Still, AAA spokeswoman Jessica Brady says prices at the pump are dropping locally and around the country.

"We have flattened demand right now, ample supply. We're using a cheaper fuel blend. All of those factors point to lower gas prices," explained Brady.  "The only caveat is when the government reopens, which will hopefully be soon, we could see prices plateau a bit and maybe even increase a few cents."

Some drivers who managed to snag a deal Tuesday, said they're optimistic about getting more bargains at the pump in the near future.

"I remember when gas was 94-cents when I moved here in '94," said Westchase resident Michelle Jamison.  "I'm still hopeful for those days."
