LAKELAND, FL (WFLA) -

Sleepy Hill Middle School in Lakeland is hoping to dial into smart phone users’ generosity.

The school has launched a program to take donated smart phones and upgrade them to electronic reading devices for students.

According to Jennifer Bookhamer, who works in the Resource Department at Sleepy Hill Middle, the school is asking residents to donate any unused smart phones they have.  She says students can use the phones to access free eBooks from hundreds of websites as well as libraries from around the country.

Bookhamer says donated phones do not need a SIM card to use Wi-Fi, and they don’t need phone service to use Wi-Fi either. As for security and privacy concerns, Bookhamer says donors don’t have to worry.

“If you ‘wipe’ your phone it takes it back to the way it was when you purchased it. No apps, no text, no numbers, no data,” Bookhamer said.

If you or your organization is willing to collect used smart phones, you can e-mail or call: Jennifer.Bookhamer@polk-fl.net or Sleepy Hill Middle School 863-815-6577.
