HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FL (WFLA) -

The Florida Highway Patrol has launched a statewide effort aimed at making teenagers safer drivers. Last year, more than 22,000 teen drivers were involved in traffic crashes, 41 of those were deadly accidents. This year, 35 teens have died in fatal crashes. The highway patrol's campaign is called Delete Teen Crashes.

Sgt. Steve Gaskins took a rollover simulator to Lennard High School in Ruskin, where he showed driver education students what happens when a car rolls over and passengers aren't buckled up. One student gasped as a dummy came flying out of the car window. "Watch what happens." Gaskins told the group. "Even though the car is upside down, if you're wearing your seatbelt like the dummies inside the car are wearing their seatbelts, they're right inside the car. Right where they started, right where they need to be. "

The highway patrol believes demonstrations like the one at Lennard are invaluable. "It calls attention to the matter." Said Gaskins. "It lets them know that both law enforcement, with the educational component, the high schools, the drivers ed programs. That we're working together doing what we can to make sure that the students take it seriously. "

Angelica Holman is an 18-year old student and believes the patrol's program sends a strong message to teen drivers. "There are a lot of kids my age that are in car crashes every day and die from them, not just injuries but a lot of deaths." Said Holman. "So it teaches us you need to have your seat belt on, you need to make sure that you don't have your cell phone."
