Tampa Police say they are tracking down "good leads" in the shooting of a Plant High School student that happened on Friday after the Plant football game.

Police say a 15-year-old female student and a 16-year-old female student were walking home after the game on Friday when a man pulled up next to them in a car.

Police say the man made a statement to the girls and pointed a gun at them.

Investigators say the girls ran and the man shot the 16-year-old girl in the lower leg.

Tampa Police spokesperson Andrea Davis says, “They
absolutely did the right thing by running away. Who knows what they would have done if they stuck around."

Hillsborough County School spokesperson Stephen Hegarty says there is additional security at Plant High School today.

On Saturday, Plant's principal, Rob Nelson sent out a recorded message to parents advising them of the shooting.

Nelson says, “Obviously
we have increased security, kind of during arrival and dismissal. We are working with Tampa Police and the Hillsborough County Security Department. We do have a couple of large night events this week, a big pep rally tomorrow night and a football game on Friday. So, we'll have some increased security there, but we'll try to keep it as normal as possible."

On Friday night as fans cheered on the Plant Panthers, Ruby Stensrud heard gunshots.
Stensrud says, "I thought there was something that'd gone wrong in Palma Ceia, that doesn't usually happen in this kind of a neighborhood."

Stensrud was staying in a home near the scene of the shooting and like many was shocked there would be a shooting in the neighborhood.

Stensrud says," The people come here because they want to live here and who would think that their daughters would not be safe in Palma Ceia."

The school system is also working with the Tampa Police Department to assist in the investigation.

Hegarty says they are still working to determine if additional security will be needed at the next Plant home football game.

Hegarty says, "These details will be easier to work out once we know what happened that night and the details are part of the investigation right now."

The families of the victims have asked us not to release the names of the two teens.

SUSPECT DESCRIPTION: White male, between 20-30 years old, possibly wearing a red shirt. He had a black ski type mask on his head (not covering his face). He was clean shaven and had a chubby face.
