Brother of slain Knightdale woman charged with stealing her vehicle

KNIGHTDALE, N.C. -

The brother of a Knightdale woman found dead inside her apartment Saturday is suspected to be involved in his sister's death.

Knightdale Police were called to the Alta Legacy Oaks apartment complex on Baxter Lane Saturday to check on the welfare of 55-year-old Seanne Winters Barnette.

When responding officers arrived, they found Barnette dead inside the apartment.

Two days prior to her body's discovery, Virginia State Troopers found her vehicle on Interstate 95 in Prince William County, Va. Barnette's brother, 70-year-old John Wesley Winters, Jr., was inside the vehicle when it was located.

Winters was initially transported to Sentara Hospital in Woodbridge, Va., for medical evaluation, but he has since been charged in connection with the theft of Barnette's vehicle.

Knightdale Police is continuing its investigation to determine Winters' involvement in Barnette's death.

Police say Winters had been living with Barnette at the apartment for several weeks.

Barnette had been a substitute teacher with Durham Public Schools since 2011.
