Former Wayne County deputy arrested

GOLDSBORO, N.C. -

The North Carolina Department of Justice announced a former Wayne County deputy was arrested on several counts of obstructing justice and destroying evidence.

Randy Avon Thompson surrendered to SBI agents at the Wayne County Magistrate's Office, the DOJ said. Thompson faces four counts of obstructing justice and four counts of stealing, altering and destroying evidence.

The Wayne County Sheriff's Office said Thompson has been with the department since 2003.

His first court appearance is set for Oct. 14.
