Teen convicted of killing St. Pete police officer re-sentenced

PINELLAS COUNTY, FL -

Nicholas Lindsey appeared in a Pinellas County courtroom hoping his life sentence without parole for killing St. Petersburg police officer David Crawford in 2011 could be reduced.

His attorneys were banking on a supreme court ruling, saying anyone under 18 should not be sentenced to life without parole.

But Judge Thane Covert said Lindsey's criminal past and fights in prison lead him to think Lindsey can't be rehabilitated.

In court the judge said, "The court concludes that the deliberate senseless and callous nature of this murder, along with the defendant extreme behavior overwhelmingly outweigh the circumstances of youthful characteristics seen in the defendant."

Following an hour long hearing, the judge re-sentenced Lindsey to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Lindsey showed little emotion, even smiling next his attorney.

Afterwards, his mother seemed to accept the sentence.

"It is what the judge ordered so that's what it is, it is what it is," said Deneen Sweat.

Officer Crawford's daughter, who has sat thru every hearing, says she is pleased with judge's decision not give Lindsey a chance at parole after 25 years.

Amanda Crawford said, "The judge from the beginning seemed pretty stern on his thoughts, so deep down I was just hoping that he would never get out and he won't, so I don't have to worry about it anymore."

A retired St. Petersburg police officer who worked closely with David Crawford also seemed relieved with Friday's sentencing, youthful indiscretion or not.

Stew Crisco said, "Killing a police officer is not a normal crime and this rose to the level where he clearly deserved life in prison with no parole.”

As Lindsey was led away from the courtroom, it may have been his last chance to ever be outside prison walls again.
