Hernando holds drive through flu shot clinic

SPRING HILL, FL (WFLA) -

Now that flu season has started, the Hernando County Health Department and Walgreens teamed up to create a drive through flu shot clinic on Thursday morning.  

Set up at Anderson Snow Park in Spring Hill, flu shot recipients were guided through three stage points while staying in their vehicles. First was a health survey, then insurance or cash payment and the final stop where shots were given.

Ginny Dileo says she found this experience to be a great alternative to going into a clinic.

"For mom this is great because she doesn't have to get out of the car and she can just sit here. Drive up. It's quick easy," Dileo said.

This was more than just a flu shot clinic.  It was also a test for the Hernando County Emergency Response System.

Nina Mattei is the Hernando County Health Department's disaster planner. She says, "we might have to give antibiotics if we were attacked with anthrax. We might have to give vaccinations if it was a pandemic so what's really valuable is working with our partners like Walgreens, getting our staff out here, and then practicing what we planned to see what works and to see where we can improve."

Nearly 40 drive through patients were given the flu shot on Thursday.
