Tampa Bay area man retires after 40 years in same job

Posted: Updated:
TEMPLE TERRACE, FL (WFLA) - Charlie Renfroe says he wouldn't change a thing about his job. He's kept it for more than 40 years. Renfroe started at International Paper Company in Temple Terrace when he was just 27.

"I came in when we were at the old plant," Renfroe said. "I started on the midnight shift."

He's an oddity considering according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, on average, people have 11 jobs in their lifetime. He's known as the guy on the sweeper. Renfroe rides around on an industrial sweeper, and keeps everything in order.

"He's a great guy," manager Doug Stewart said. "I don't think he ever has a bad day. If he does you wouldn't know about it."

Renfroe has only ever  worked for one other company. He says he stayed for the great benefits and management. It's obvious that Renfroe has trouble walking. When he's on the sweeper, nothing holds him back.

"I couldn't ask for no more," Renfroe said.

The company veteran plans to retire in May. When he leaves, his sweeper will shut down as well. He plans to continue his positive outlook that brightened up the paper plant, throughout his retirement.

"I don't worry about a thing," Renfroe said. "I just go with the flow."
