Tegu lizard spotted in Palm Beach County

Posted: Updated:
A resident in the suburban Lake Worth spotted a gigantic Argentine tegu lizard near her home, WPTV reported.

Nadja Kranites pulled out her phone and started taking pictures of the creature to report it to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

"I didn't dare to get too close," she said in an interview with WPTV. "I didn't want to get too close because you never know what they'll do."

She said she was scared of the gigantic reptile, a non-native species in Florida.

FWC representatives say, these invasive lizards form colonies in the state and threaten native species, filling in the niche where a native predator didn't exist. Tegus can forever change the Florida landscape, according to WPTV story.

Officials say, the tegu numbers are growing and they need to be stopped. You can read more about how to help stop them here.
