Garner Magnet HS among first to benefit from Wake school bond

Posted: Updated:

Inside Garner's Heather Hills precinct, the vote totals for the $810 million school bond mirrored the rest of Wake County.

Voters said "yes" to the financing to help pay for major renovations and 16 new schools.

"When it comes to schools, every family has had a child in the public schools and they know how important it is to maintain," Sam Bridges said.

Bridges is a former mayor of Garner and the father of a freshman at Garner Magnet High School.  Home to no fewer than 40 so-called "modular classrooms," or trailers, Garner is the poster child for Wake County's explosive growth in the last couple of decades.

"Some of the trailers at Garner High School have been there 20 years or more," he said.

Garner Magnet High School is home to more than 2,400 students, putting the school about 40 percent over capacity.

A new school is now on the way with the bond money now approved.

Construction is expected to begin in the fall of 2014, one of the first project to get funding soon after Wake County approves the tax increase to start paying for the bond.

The first students could take their seats by 2016.  The price tag is more than $62 million.

It's construction Bridges said is long overdue.

"High schools are large now and they're expensive," Bridges said.  "They cost between $60 and $75 million. We think it's important for Wake County and its citizens to continue to invest."

Once construction is complete on the new school, students at Garner Magnet High School will move over to the new building while $67 million in renovations take place at the old high school.
