2 dead, 1 injured in Tampa moped crash

Posted: Updated:
TAMPA, FL (WFLA) -

The Florida Highway Patrol says two moped riders are dead and a third has serious injuries following a crash in Tampa involving a hit-and-run driver.

The crash happened late Sunday.

Troopers say 19-year-old Cameron Maddox was carrying two friends on the back of the moped when a car slammed into them from behind. Maddox and his passengers were tossed onto the road. A young woman whose name hasn't been released was thrown into another lane and a passing car ran over her. She died at the scene.

Authorities say 16-year-old Michael Garcia died at the hospital. Maddox remains in the hospital with serious injuries.

Hillsborough County Sheriff's deputies tracked down the driver of the car at her home. So far 23-year-old Amanda Diaz has not been charged.  We caught up with Diaz at her Tampa apartment.  She says this was nothing more than a horrible accident.  "It was a very tragic accident, you know, my heart is with the families."  Said Diaz.  "It was an accident, it could happen to anybody. Just gotta be more careful. That's all I have to say. "

The Florida Highway Patrol is the lead agency investigating, and Sgt. Steve Gaskins says charges against Diaz are pending.  "In cases like this, typically it will take several months before we bring any charges to start any court proceedings for example."  Said Gaskins.  "We want to make sure we have all the facts in hand. Make sure we have toxicology, autopsy reports, witness statements before we make any judgement calls. "
