HCC prepares students for careers in service industry

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FL (WFLA) -

The hotel, restaurant and service industry is big business in Florida, and Hillsborough Community College is getting major props for preparing its students to find jobs in this growing field.

HCC students like James Brittan are cooking up new careers plans in hopefully one day working in Florida's thriving service industry.

"I started working doing volunteer work with the Rolling Pin out in Brandon, and I thought this is fun, so I decided to come to school and really learn what I was doing," said Brittan, who is now in his 4th semester at HCC's main Tampa campus.

Chef instructor Fred Jaeger who oversees HCC's culinary, restaurant and hotel management programs, says there are great opportunity for star students.

"We have students in all the full service resort locations, the great upscale restaurants, the casinos, you name it they're there," he said.

HCC works hard to help it's students find jobs by forming strategic partnerships with Tampa Bay businesses so students can gain practicum experience.

"They have to do 500 hours so to do that we require business partners - like the Westin Tampa Bay or the Vigo Importing Company in Tampa, to and assist us in providing that real time education," said Elizabeth Johnson, the dean of HCC.

Westin and Vigo Importing company are two of the many local companies that bring on students as interns, that many times can turn into full time employment.

"We're so close to the school so it's easy for us to give them the products to work with at school, we bring them to our headquarters to help with recipe development," said Alessandra Alessi of Vigo Importing Company."

These types of partnerships are turning out to be a recipe for success for students at HCC.
