SILER CITY, N.C. -

A 12,000-pound piece of steel from the World Trade Center was on display in front of a Siler City shopping center Saturday as part of Fire Prevention Week.

Chatham County received the beam in 2011 with the intention to build a permanent memorial. But as the search for a spot and money continues, the beam has been locked in an undisclosed location.

"It represents all the men and women that lost their life on Sept. 11," said firefighter Jody Allen. "It represents all the armed forces people who went overseas and battled for our freedom and lost their life or may have not lost their life.

"This beam represents everybody that's put their life on hold to sacrifice for others."

Allen heads the Chatham County 9/11 First Responders' Memorial Foundation, which formed in recent months to get the long-delayed project done.

The group has found a possible spot for the memorial. It would be located in Pittsboro near the fire department and new Chatham County Justice Center.

Allen said they are now waiting to hear from the county commissioners on a price for the land, which could happen later this month.

The new goal is to have the memorial in place by next summer and in time for a service to commemorate 9/11 in 2014.
