Progress Village party shooter sentenced to 40 years in prison

TAMPA, FL (WFLA) -

On Friday, Tyrell Bragg learned his prison sentence. The 23-year-old was sentenced for shooting and killing an 18-year-old woman at a party in 2011.

Bragg sat quietly while waiting for the judge's decision. In the meantime, his victim's mother sobbed at the back of the room.

Hillsborough County deputies say in July 2011, Bragg was kicked out of a party on Highway 41. Officials say he then grabbed a gun, came back and fired into the crowd, killing 18-year-old Iesha Washington.

He was charged and later convicted of felon possession of a firearm and second degree murder.

Before the judge made his decision on Friday, Bragg's sister made a plea to the judge.

She said Bragg always aspired to study science and help the world.

"I believe that Tyrell Bragg can change," she said about him. "Regardless of what anybody made him as, regardless of what he has done, I know he can be a positive aspect to the community."

Iesha Washington's mother Vannetta Scott spoke out too.

"You had time to think when you brought that gun to a party. That was a kid's party!" she said. "How do I get through this? I get through it knowing that there is justice."

The judge then decided to sentence Bragg to 40 years in prison. Bragg never expressed any emotion - something that bothered Washington's family.

"Hopefully one day he'll actually say 'I'm sorry.' He's never said 'I'm sorry.' He just sits there with a cold face," Washington's sister, Kenya Scott said.

But despite that, the family is relieved that justice took its course. Bragg has an opportunity to appeal.
