Federal shutdown impacting Tampa business

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FL (WFLA) -

Tony Arecco runs a small business near Tampa International Airport.

Arecco is not a federal employee, but he does rely on the federal government to do his job.  Arecco helps importers navigate through the permits and paperwork needed to bring their goods into the country.

"We do everything pretty much from granite to live fish to RV's that are coming in from Canada," says Arecco.

This week, he's been frustrated trying to do his work.

Arecco uses several government web sites to obtain the information he needs to process the imports.

"FDA and Fish and Wildlife are the big ones, because they also protect the interior of the United States and the health of the community and without them being able to see what's going on, we're stopped and it's frustrating," Arecco said.

This week those web sites shut down due to a lack of federal funding.

Arecco says, "What happened is, they've taken the technology away and the access of the government workers."

Without access to the information, some of the importers he works with can no longer bring their goods into the U.S.

"So, therefore orders that have already been ordered, can't be shipped to the United States, everything is on hold till we open back up," said Arecco.
