Tampa Bay Bucs release QB Freeman

Posted: Updated:
TAMPA, FL (WFLA) - Tampa Bay Buccaneers confirmed the release of the former starting quarterback Josh Freeman Thursday.

The Bucs' General Manager Mark Dominik issued a statement regarding this move.

"We made the decision today to release Josh Freeman," he said in the statement. "We appreciate his efforts over the past five seasons, but we felt this was in the best interests of both Josh and the Buccaneers."

The statement was posted on the team's official website Thursday afternoon. The team drafted Freeman in 2009 and he started 59 games for the team, according to the website.

"After Freeman’s public plea for a trade or release, followed by leaked stories that painted both Freeman and the Bucs in a negative light, the end of Freeman’s tenure with the Buccaneers was inevitable," says News Channel 8 sports anchor Jason Jennings.  "It appears Bucs’ GM Mark Dominik found no other team willing to trade for Freeman and take on his contract, giving the team no choice but to release Freeman and pay him the final year of the contract."

No one can say when the mountainside collapsing into this Wyoming resort town will give way. But it appears increasingly likely that when it does, it's going to take a piece of Jackson with it.
