Sarasota couple in jail for robbing elderly

Posted: Updated:
SARASOTA COUNTY, FL (WFLA) - Deputies arrested a Sarasota couple for stealing about $50,000 worth of jewelry from a World War II vet they lived with, according to Sarasota County Sheriff's Office report.

Christina and Kevin Babbidge are under arrest on charges of exploitation of elderly. The man they reportedly robbed, Boston Dixon, 87, let the couple live at his house on New England Street because he needed help.

The World War II veteran's health was in decline after his wife had passed in 2012, and a recent fall sent him to a hospital. He invited Kevin, 48, and Christina, 33, to come live with him and help with chores. He had known the couple for about 10 years, Kevin Babbidge cleaned the house before. In addition to living in his house and even sleeping in his master bedroom, Dixon paid Babbidge $200 for running errands.

A few weeks ago Dixon discovered a lot of jewelry was missing from the house. He confronted the couple and asked about it. When they denied they had anything to do with it, he asked them to leave and contacted the sheriff's office.

The couple left the house. SCSO detectives investigated and found out that Kevin Babbidge had taken some missing jewelry to the local pawns. They arrested the couple and also learned that Kevin Babbidge had pawned some of Dixon's jewelry about a year ago.

Detectives continue to investigate. Kevin and Christina Babbidge are held on bond of $50,000 each.
