Hi-tech hygiene at Sarasota hospital

Posted: Updated:
SARASOTA COUNTY, FL (WFLA) -

Hospitals are going high tech to combat poor hand hygiene, and a Sarasota company is leading the way with a breakthrough device.

"It's actually the first tool that's available to allow hospitals to look at hand hygiene down to the individual healthcare worker level," said Seth Freedman, founder of Sarasota's IntelligentM.

The Sarasota company developed the world's smallest commercially worn radio frequency identifications technology or RFID reader. The system uses encoded tags with tiny antennas which are places on soap dispensers and hospital equipment. The tags then communicate with a 'smart band' worn by health care providers.

"So all the data that's captured during a health care workers day, are they using sanitizer correctly, are they using soap correctly, did they sanitize or wash when they walked into a patients room? Did they wash their hands properly before they inserted a catheter? All of that is collected on the 'smart band'," Freedman said.

Hospitals nationwide are installing IntelligentM to bring down the staggering statistic of people who die every year in this country become of hospital borne infections.
