Family, Community want answers in school employee's death

Posted: Updated:
MANATEE COUNTY, FL (WFLA) -

Dozens of Patrick Mullins' friends and family members gathered for a fundraiser Saturday afternoon at the King Family Ranch in Bradenton. Some at that event had never even met Mullins, but was there to support the family.  The money raised will be used to seek out answers in Mullins' death.

The Coast Guard reported that Patrick Mullins' 14-foot boat was found adrift January 28 between Egmont Key buoys 9 and 10. The Guard searched for Mullins for about 66 hours and covered more than 2,200 square miles.

A fisherman found his body floating in the Manatee River days later. Investigators say he was found tied to a 25 foot anchor rope.  Authorities have not said if they believe Mullins was murdered, or took his own life.

Mullins was a media specialist at Palmetto High School.

Jodi John is Mullins' sister-in-law and helped organize the event. She says the family just wants answers. "We want to find out what happened to Pat." Said John. "We want to make sure that if anything like this happens to someone else in the community that it is properly and thoroughly investigated... " Some have speculated that Mullins committed suicide. John says she doesn't believe that is the case. "From what we've been able to determine by the reports and the investigation that was done, that the investigation was pretty one sided and it never looked into the whole picture and we feel very strongly knowing Pat." Said John. "And what he did in the previous few hours before his life was taken from him, it wasn't something that was planning to take their own life would've done. "

Manatee County Sheriff's detectives will only say this investigation is still active.
