HERNANDO COUNTY, FL (WFLA) -

Hernando County Sheriff Al Nienhuis says his agency's detectives have shut down three illegal, online casino storefronts, just months after state lawmakers voted to shut those businesses down statewide.

Nienhuis said Thursday that three businesses in Hernando County were operating illegally.

He added that several vendors have developed different variations of gambling software and are promoting the sweepstakes software to area business owners.

The Florida Legislature approved a sweeping ban on the gambling businesses after the investigation into a charity that owned many online casino storefronts was announced in March. Fifty-seven people were arrested during the sweep. Defense attorneys say the parlors were places where patrons could access the Internet and play sweepstakes-like games that were no different than ones offered by fast food restaurants.
