RALEIGH, N.C. -

Duke Energy Foundation is giving a $75,000 grant to the Triangle Chapter of the American Red Cross for disaster preparedness projects.

The funds will provide disaster preparedness outreach to high-risk, vulnerable communities throughout the Triangle-area. The initiative includes education materials and water-resistant emergency kits that instruct people on stocking the kit and contacting Duke Energy in case of a power outage.

"Our most economically vulnerable communities are often those most impacted by a disaster," said Paul Newton, Duke Energy's state president. "We are glad to be part of preparing our communities for a quick recovery in response to terrible events."

In North Carolina, Duke Energy Foundation invests $16 million annually for community support and charitable contributions. In 2013, the foundation is making an additional one-time commitment of $20 million to support low-income energy assistance and workforce development in North Carolina.
