WILSON, N.C. -

Thousands of pounds of food were distributed out to record numbers of people in Wilson as part of a quarterly food drive by a local non-profit. The need was so intense, a couple hundred people started lining up 24 hours before the doors officially opened at 8:30 a.m.

"There are people that we just had to turn away. You just can't ever get enough food for the needy," said Howard Fisher, founder of Opportunities Industrialization Center of Wilson.

The center has been doing this for 27 years and Fischer has watched the need increase.

"People were in line yesterday to get this bag of food today," Fischer said. "It really breaks your heart to see that kind of need."

Approximately 1,500 people received food during this drive.

"This is an opportunity to get something to provide for my family so we can have something to eat," said recipient Theodore Ivy.

Some in line complained of people abusing the system.

"Anytime you get a bag, then go home and come back, that's cheating because someone else in that line gets cut short," said food recipient Hattie Jenkins.

But Fischer said only a small percentage come back for more food.

"Anytime you have 1,500 coming through, you might get 10 that get through by hook or by crook," Fischer said.
