Panama the dolphin, Winter's 450-pound "adopted mother" at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium, is dead.

Aquarium director David Yates said Panama died today, presumably from old age, but the exact cause is unknown.

"I can't make any more comment now because I'm right in the middle of it," said Yates.

Panama was 40 years old. She came to the Clearwater aquarium from Gulf Marine Park in Panama City 13 years ago, according to the aquarium's website.

Authorities considered Panama "non-releasable" because she was considered to be a "beggar" dolphin who had become accustomed to feeding by humans.

In 2007 trainers discovered she had become deaf after seeing that she no longer responded to whistle blows during training sessions.

Prior to her death Panama was mainly used for guest interactions  and did most of the physical acts during dolphin presentations.
