GREENE COUNTY, TN (WJHL) -

This morning, South Greene students gathered to pray and heal after a student stabbed another student Tuesday morning before the start of classes.

Greene County Director of Schools Dr. Vicki Kirk told News Channel 11 students joined together around the flag pole to pray for the 15-year-old stabbing victim.

Greene County EMS officials identified the stabbing victim as Daniel Birchfield on Wednesday afternoon.

Dr. Kirk says the teen remains in stable condition at a local hospital and could be going home in a couple of days.

The director of schools told us the victim gave a message to the school, which was read in an assembly early this morning, asking students to forgive the suspect.

She also commented on the bravery of the female student, who officials say tackled the suspect after the attack.

"She is a remarkable young lady and I am very proud of her and all of the students on how they responded to the incident," said Kirk.

Tonight on News Channel 11 we will hear from the principal of the school and about the girl many are calling a hero.
