Explosion rocks Oxford roofing plant, no one injured

OXFORD, N.C. -

An over-pressurized tank is to blame for an explosion at a roofing plant Tuesday in Oxford.

CertainTeed said an over-pressurization asphalt conversion tank caused an explosion at the plant around 10:15 a.m. Tuesday

"It basically had the effect of a tank popping its lid. There was no fire," said Mike Loughery, with CertainTeed Corp.

Occupational Safety and Health Administration is on site to investigate the explosion. At this time, Loughery said it was not clear why the tank was over pressurized.

Loughery said there were 125 working at the time of the explosion, and no one was injured.

"All were safely accounted for and evacuated," Loughery said.

The plant it the world's largest manufacturer of asphalt roofing shingles, Loughery said.
