Quickest route into NFL draft goes through SEC

The Southeastern Conference has become the most popular jumping-off point for underclassmen looking for a head start on NFL careers. The trend creates more spots to fill around the league with preseason camps approaching, but also helps entice blue-chip prospects to play in the SEC. No league has had nearly as many players leaving early to pursue NFL careers over the past eight years, and LSU has had the most of any program two years running. Tennessee coach Butch Jones believes his program is slowly moving forward, even though the results suggests the Volunteers remain stuck in neutral.

The Vols wasted an opportunity to end a couple of losing streaks Saturday by falling 31-17 to No. 20 Florida after the Gators quarterback Jeff Driskel broke his lower right leg in the first quarter. Tennessee has lost its last nine games with Florida and its last 18 games against ranked opponents.

Tennessee's latest loss created more questions about the Vols' quarterback situation and more concern about their lack of playmakers, but Jones saw hope in the way Tennessee continued competing after self-destructing in the first half.

The Vols (2-2) try to end their 2-game losing streak Saturday when they return home to face South Alabama.
