DURHAM, N.C. -

Durham police said one man is dead following a collision Friday afternoon on N.C. Highway 55.

Tyreic Elyja Hemphill, 16, of Durham crossed the center median while heading northbound on N.C. Highway 55 around 4:30 p.m., police said. Hemphill crossed into the path of a 1990 Oldsmobile Delta 88 driven by Patrick Bailey, 36, of Durham.

Durham investigators said Bailey attempted to avoid the collision but his vehicle hit the passenger side of Hemphill's car.

The impact forced both vehicles down an embankment, according to police.

Durham police said Hemphill was trapped in his vehicle for several minutes before Durham firefighters pulled him from the wreckage. He was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Bailey was taken to the hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

Police said speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors in the accident.
