Pasco principal says fight video not what it seems

Posted: Updated:
ZEPHYRHILLS, FL (WFLA) -

Zephyrhills High School Principal Andy Frelick says he was at bus duty Thursday morning when he spotted two students arguing.

"They were kind of juking back and forth.  One kid was just backing up not being the aggressor," Frelick said.

The entire incident was being captured on video from a student close by. Principal Frelick says he was heading to break up the fight when he saw the aggressive student bring back his arm for a punch.

As the video plays out, Frelick moves in quickly and appears to tackle the aggressive student. Buy Frelick says that is not what happened.

He says the concrete sidewalk is uneven and that as he approached the students he lost his footing and tripped.

Linda Cobbe with Pasco County Schools says they looked at the video and they agree that Frelick did trip.

"If you slow it down and you look at his feet you can see right when he stubbles and just goes into the kid," Cobbe said.

Principal Frelick says the parents of the aggressive student are upset about what their child did, not about the way the fight was stopped.

The fight was over the theft of a pair of expensive shoes. Frelick says the student being attacked admitted to stealing the shoes and posting them for sale on the internet.

Frelick says it could have been worse if he didn't get there in time.

"All it takes is that one punch that could really kill somebody. So on my end parents trust me to make sure their kids are safe and so I was trying to...I mean I did stop him from landing the punch," Frelick said.

Melanie and Jeffrey Cornwell should have been getting a tax break for years on part of the homestead property in Dunedin they call their "little piece of Heaven." But due to a mistake at the Pinellas Property Appraiser's Office, they won't see any rebates for previous taxes, just a break on future tax bills.
