AVERY COUNTY, NC (WJHL) -

A section of Highway 194 reopened this morning in Avery County about two months after a mudslide destroyed a portion of the road and homes along the thoroughfare.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation reopened the road at 8 a.m. Department of Transportation officials say Highway 194 reopened a month earlier than expected because of the dry weather in the area over the last month.

Back on July 16, a mudslide caused a portion of the road to collapse. This also destroyed several homes.
