Human bones found in Lakeland woods

Posted: Updated:

Polk County Sheriff's Homicide detectives were conducting a death investigation in Lakeland Tuesday after a Tampa man found human bones in the woods.

A man was looking for scrap metal on North Wabash Avenue in Lakeland, between Memorial Blvd and Crutchfield Road, when he found a human skull and some bones.

The man called PCSO to report finding the remains.

PCSO detectives and Crime Scene Investigators processed the scene, taking photos, and conducting a thorough search to locate additional evidence.

The bones will be taken to the Medical Examiner's Office for examination for identification and to determine cause of death.   Officials say the bones appear to be those of an adult.

The investigation is ongoing.
