Burr co-hosting event for Tillis Senate bid in DC

RALEIGH, N.C. -

U.S. Sen. Richard Burr's political committee says his involvement in a campaign fundraiser for North Carolina House Speaker Thom Tillis next week should not be seen as an official endorsement of Tillis' own Senate bid.

Burr will co-host with two other Republican senators a Sept. 24 event in Washington for Tillis' Senate campaign. Tillis is among four announced candidates for May's GOP primary. The winner will take on Democratic incumbent Kay Hagan.

Burr's campaign released a statement Tuesday saying Burr has always been happy to "help any North Carolina Republican who wants to come to Washington to raise money."

Tillis has fundraisers this week in Winston-Salem, Wallace and his hometown of Cornelius.

Tillis consultant Paul Shumaker says his client will have other events featuring national and North Carolina notables.
