Boy, 2, hurt after falling into hot coals

Posted: Updated:
ST PETERSBURG, FL -

A two year old boy fell into a fire pit that contained hot coals at the KOA Campground in St. Petersburg around 10:30 a.m. on Sunday.

The campground is located at 5400 95th Street. The Crimes Against Children Unit were called to the scene to conduct an investigation and determined the incident appears to be accidental in nature.

According to investigators, 2-year-old Johnathan Moore was riding a scooter in a patio area near the fire pit, when he lost his balance and fell into the pit containing heated coals. Detectives say his mother, 32-year-old Tracey Fincher and other family members pulled the child out of the pit. The family called 911 and administered aid to the boy until first responders arrived on scene.

The child was subsequently transported by air to Tampa General Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. Detectives say the child is in stable condition in the intensive care-unit of the hospital. He sustained first and second degree burns to his back, left arm and left leg.

The family was celebrating the boy's second birthday.
