Lutz man shoots son after attack

Posted: Updated:
LUTZ, FL (WFLA) -

A Lutz man shot his son last night in the chest after he attacked him and tried to choke him, according to Hillsborough deputies.

Authorities say Eric Harris, 26, and his girlfriend had returned to his home at 18627 San Rio Circle from a USF Bulls football game when they became involved in an argument just after 11 pm Saturday night.

Larry McKinnon with the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office says Harris was intoxicated and the argument spilled over between Eric and his father Henry, who was in the process of taking his four pit bulls for a walk.  Henry Harris has a concealed weapons permit and usually carries a 9 mm handgun for protection when he walks the dogs.

As Henry tried to leave the house, authorities say that Eric attacked him from behind and placed him in a choke hold. Henry told deputies that he couldn't breathe, his arms began to tingle and he started to lose consciousness but managed to break free.

Henry says that's when his son came at him again, so he pulled out his handgun and shot Eric one time in the chest. Henry and a neighbor then called 9-1-1 and waited for deputies to arrive.

Paramedics transported Eric Harris to a local hospital where he is currently in stable condition.

Detectives are interviewing witnesses and processing the crime scene. Once the investigation is complete, it will be turned over to the Hillsborough County State Attorney's Office to determine if criminal charges will be filed. No arrests have been made at this time.
