Series of 9/11 remembrances scheduled across NC

A mobile museum and a series of military services are among the observances scheduled across North Carolina on Wednesday to commemorate the 12th anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the U.S.
    
The 4th Fighter Wing at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base has scheduled several memorial events. A ceremony slated for the base firehouse includes a 21-gun salute, a slideshow illustrating the events of Sept. 11, 2001, and several speakers.
    

During the ceremony at Seymour Johnson, a memorial 9/11 run will begin. The 24-hour run is on the track around the Three Eagles Golf Course.

In Fayetteville, a 9/11 Mobile Museum is scheduled to be unveiled at the Airborne and Special Operations Museum in Fayetteville. The museum contains artifacts donated by New York firefighters specially selected to provide a look at what happened that morning in lower Manhattan.
    
FDNY Battalion Chief John LaBarbera and Capt. John Carroll will accompany the mobile museum. Both men were at ground zero in New York.
    
The mobile museum will head to Atlanta on Sept. 15, then return for a five-day stop in Raleigh beginning Sept. 17.
    
The Onslow Civic Affairs Committee is hosting a remembrance at Camp Johnson, which is adjacent to the Beirut Memorial. Local law enforcement, firefighters, first responders and rescue personnel will represent those who were killed while responding to the attacks. During the event, participants will observe a moment of silence at 8:46 a.m., one minute after the first impact at the World Trade Center.

9/11 events in the Raleigh area

6 a.m. - Fitness, Fellowship and Faith - Approximately 60 men will be climbing 110 flights of stairs at the parking deck located on the northwest corner of Blount and Hargett near Moore Square, across from Marbles. 

8:30 a.m. - 4th Fighter Wing memorial event - Seymour Johnson AFB is hosting several events including a 21 gun salute, slideshow and speakers. The memorial 24-hour run will begin, ending at 9 a.m. Thursday. 

8:30 a.m. - Remembrance Ceremony at Fort Bragg - The 82nd Airborne Band will perform along with a 21 gun salute and a wreath laying.

9 a.m. - 11 a.m. - First Responders Ceremony - The Airborne and Special Ops Foundation will be posting flags in honor of those first responders killed on 9/11 at the Special Operations Museum in Fayetteville. 

9 a.m. - 11 a.m. - Corporate sponsors of the Durham Goodwill and Food Bank of N.C. will be harvesting and planting food at 4808 Chin Page Road.

9:30 a.m. - 11 a.m. - Preschoolers will plant flags at Primrose School at West Lake, 4501 West Lake Road, Apex.

9:30 a.m. - Gov. Pat McCrory plans to attend the Sort-A-Rama in the Jim Graham Building at the N.C. State fairgrounds. 700 volunteers gather to bag 100,000 meals for families at-risk of hunger.

6 p.m. -   Activate Raleigh is holding a food drive at Red Hat Amphitheater. 

 

A timeline of the events on 9/11

  • 7:59 a.m. – American Airlines Flight 11, with 92 people aboard, takes off from Boston's Logan International Airport.
  • 8:14 a.m. – United Airlines Flight 175, with 65 people aboard, takes off from Boston.
  • 8:19 a.m. – Flight attendants aboard Flight 11 alert ground personnel that the plane has been hijacked.
  • 8:20 a.m. – American Airlines Flight 77 takes off from Dulles International Airport near Washington, D.C with 64 people aboard. 
  • 8:41 a.m. – United Airlines Flight 93 takes off from Newark with 44 people aboard.
  • 8:46 a.m. – Mohammed Atta and the other hijackers aboard AA Flight 11 crash the plane into the North Tower of the World Trade Center.
  • 9:03 a.m. – Hijackers crash United Airlines Flight 175 into WTC's South Tower.
  • 9:37 a.m. – Hijackers aboard Flight 77 crash the plane into the Pentagon, killing 59 aboard the plane and 125 inside the building.
  • 9:59 a.m. – The South Tower of the WTC collapses.
  • 10:07 a.m. -  United Flight 93 crashes into a field in Somerset County, Pennsylvania, killing all 40 passengers and crew aboard.
  • 10:28 a.m. – The WTC's North Tower collapses.
