Record setting gator captured in Mississippi

Posted: Updated:

Alligators in Mississippi have snapped up a prized gator, breaking a record set just last week.

The 741 pound gator broke the record of 727 pounds set September 1. The record gator was caught in the area where the Bayou Pierre empties into the Mississippi River.

Lee Turner, 30, and his crew from Gluckstadt caught the new record gator.

"Snagged him with treble hooks actually set into him uh ended up with five lines on him, tied him up to the side of the boat. We had a good fight on our hands, we fought him for about an hour. Really didn't know how big he was till his whole body came out of the water the first time while he was pulling us down the river. So we finally got him upside the boat," Turner recounted.

Officials in Mississippi think, despite the size of this latest catch, this new record will be broken. "I believe we've got alligators in Mississippi that are in the 900 to one-thousand pound range. Whether an alligator hunter can be successful at getting him in and harvesting them is another story," said Ricky Flynt, alligator program coordinator for the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks.

In all, it took seven people to finally land the new record alligator.

This catch is the latest in a string of massive alligator captures in recent weeks. With alligator hunting season underway in many states, a number of massive gators have been captured.
