Crews rescue man trapped between granite slabs in Largo

LARGO, FL (WFLA) -

Technical operations crews responded to Ulmerton Road Monday afternoon in Largo to rescue a man trapped between sheets of quarts, officials said.

The crews arrived to Pelican International at 6140 Ulmerton Road where a man was stuck between sheets of quarts and a pallet.

Fire officials say Sergio Alvarez, 45, of Clearwater, was unloading several pallets of quartz. When he released one of the pallets, the supports broke.

Officials said 10 sheets of quarts fell on Alvarez, pinning him between the sheets and another pallet.

The situation required a full technical rescue operation, officials said. Officials estimated the sheets weighed about 10,000 pounds total.

The crew removed the man from under the sheets in less than an hour.

A medical helicopter was dispatched to the scene to transport the man to a hospital. Doctors listed his injuries as non-life threatening.

Pinellas deputies said the fall appeared to be accidental by nature.
