Tampa man pleads guilty to tricking pregnant girlfriend

TAMPA, FL (WFLA) -

A Tampa man now admits he gave his former girlfriend a drug that caused her to abort their unborn child.

28-year-old John Andrew Weldon entered a guilty plea for two counts against him in federal court on Monday.

Weldon wore a suit to court and spoke in a clear calm voice in response to questions from the judge.

Weldon now admits that in March of 2013, he gave his girlfriend Cytotec in a pill bottle that he had re-labeled as amoxicillin.

Weldon admits that he forged a prescription to obtain the drug from a pharmacy.

Weldon's father is a physician, but his father is not charged in the case.

Weldon's attorney, Todd Foster, says his client was facing a life sentence in prison and the plea deal is the best he could have hoped for.

Foster says, "Nobody wants to go to prison for 13 years 8 months, but this is where we are."

Under the terms of the plea arraignment with federal prosecutors, Weldon will not be able to appeal his sentence once it is handed down and he must serve at least 85 percent of the prison time.

Attorney Gil Sanchez represents Weldon's former girlfriend and says the plea deal is better than going to trial.

Sanchez says, " Obviously what he did, you can't quantify it with sentencing guidelines and United States code statutes, nothing again is ever going to bring back Reme's Child, so under the circumstances, we are satisfied that he did come up to the plate and he did admit to his guilt and now he is a convicted double felon."
