RUSSELL COUNTY, VA (WJHL) -

The attorney's office in Russell County, VA released additional details about traffic collision that resulted in a man's shooting death.

On August 20, a two-car collision occurred on Cooper Creek Road in Castlewood, VA. One of the drivers, 53-year-old Douglas Allen Witt of Abingdon, VA, was fatally shot.

Investigators say Douglas Witt was driving a flatbed truck that was pulling a heavy trailer. The other two people involved in the accident, Witt's wife and daughter, were traveling in a Ford Escape.

A probe revealed Witt rammed his truck into the car his wife and daughter were traveling in. It's believed that he continued to push it until both vehicles went over an embankment.

Witt allegedly got out of his vehicle and continued aggressively toward his wife and daughter. In fear for her and her daughter's life, Witt's wife discharged her gun – killing him.

No charges will be filed against Witt's wife. One of people in the vehicle that was struck suffered serious injuries and is expected to make a full recovery.

"It is very rare to see a justifiable homicide case, however, the undisputed facts surrounding this incident have made it clear that the shooter's actions were justified," said Commonwealth's Attorney Brian Patton.

Sheriff Steve Dye echoed Patton's remarks, "During my tenure as Sheriff, I cannot recall any other justifiable homicide cases, but this one was obviously warranted under the circumstances."

This case was under investigation by Virginia State Police and Russell County Sheriff's Office.
