Miley Cyrus fires back over VMA performance

Posted: Updated:

Speaking for the first time about her MTV Video Music Awards performance, Miley Cyrus said she told Robin Thicke they were going to "make history."

Cyrus told MTV she planned the whole thing, right down to twerking Thicke during their duet.

During the interview, Cyrus said she ignores the critics. "I don't pay attention to the negative because I've seen this play out so many times. How many times have we seen this play out in pop music?"

The performance lit up the social media sphere with comments about Cyrus. In fact, it was widely reported that her performance bested more tweets per second than even Beyonce's Super Bowl performance.

For her part, Cyrus says her performance was not anything completely new to the show. "Madonna's done it. Britney's done it. Every VMA performance, that's what you're looking for; you're wanting to make history."

The remarks came during an interview conducted for a previously announced documentary on Miley due out in the fall.
